OBESITY IN AYURVEDA
Obesity is known to Indians from Vedic period onwards by the name “Medorog”. A person in whom there is excessive accumulation of Meda (fat/adipose tissue) leading to flabbiness of hips, abdomen, chest/breast has been categorized as Atisthula. In the case of an obese person, toxins accumulate in Medovaha Srotas (fat channels), thereby leading to an increase in the production of fat tissue (Meda Dhatu). When the body produces more fat tissues, it causes an increase in weight.
Increased body fat puts a person at risk for many critical conditions such as Diabetes, Insulin resistance, increased cholesterol, Inflammation, Hypertension, Metabolic syndromes, liver damage, arthritis, kidney problems & Heart disease.
Medohara and Lekhaniya (Anti-obesity and Hypolipidemic) drugs are mentioned in Ayurvedic classical texts which are known to be effective against obesity & are known to prevent or delay the onset of its complications.
